Geeks go green

“Back to Nature” saw computer-driven corporate staff taking a break from the routine

Welcome break A Park employee walking the ramp

Software now rhymes with formalwear, partywear and casualwear in, where else, the tech corridors of the city. But when the invite included “natural wear” and themed the event “Back to Nature”, one had to pause. Do they really mean… no, it wasn’t anything alarming. A dozen brave employees of the Olympia Technology Park hit the ramp to “Go Green” in a show choreographed by the Institute of Design. Hi Style’s DIVA had its almost-pro fashion rounds (designer saris, stiff and slack sherwani-kurtas), members of John Britto’s Academy danced to foot-tapping beats, but the evening went to Park employees and their practical wear.

What was “Green”? Natural fibres like silk, cotton and jute, said Shobana, one of the organisers. And accessories like tulsi and glass bead and the sepal-like cut of the blouses. The catwalk was a contest for sponsor goodies, winners judged on “work attitude” and “individual style statement”. The contestants had to walk the ramp and justify their outfits - to deafening shouts from the crowd of colleagues who went “Boo” when they were tired of “Ooo”. It was the corporate crowd enjoying freedom from cubicles. An evening of Fun spelt Funny.

“Best ‘custume’ for software industry people,” said one about her pink churidhar-short kurta trimmed with lace. Whooo. “Dress makes a man, that’s why I’m wearing one,” said a guy in trousers/striped shirt. Booo. An employee in sari trilled, “Nothing more formal than a sari, gives identity to the bharathiya naree.” Ooooo. The girl in a well-cut corduroy three-piece suit shouted back, “Shut up and listen to me!” And won the prize for Ms. Style. The pink-clad one stood her ground and was voted Ms. Confidence.

Casual wear

The key idea was “casual”, Friday’s theme. There were dark suits and ties, but more of loose, baggy two-pieces and odd-looking cargos. One appeared to have walked in from his work-out. Most were in clothes they must have bought as a whim or to meet peer pressure. Today was the day to pull it out and try it on! “Look cute and be sweet,” tweeted a young thing in a white and pink ensemble. “Be relaxed at work,” said another in a chokingly brief blouse.

The judges were a sporting lot too. Prasan Chordia (wife of MD, Khivraj Group) never let her smile slip; Santosh Golecha of Wild Wood Crystal held her sparkle and Nidhi Chordia seemed to be having fun. It was Keerti Chawla of “Adhi”, “Alwar” and “Naan Avanillai” who made a fashion statement in her capris and front-flowing, full-sleeved sparkler top.

For the computer-driven corporate staff, it was a welcome break in the hub between shifts.
