It’s party time. A look at the trends this festive season

DECEMBER CHIC A Rahul & Firdos creation

It’s not just Christmas and New Year but the host of other parties and outdoor events lined-up for this month that gives people ample reason to put together a festive wardrobe.

The emphasis is mostly on western wear. Designer Kedar Madulla, who retails from Hyderabad and Mumbai, says people often ask for dresses saying this is the season when they can be worn.

Fabrics in vogue are velvet and satin. “Bustier style dresses in velvet are popular. The outfits are either very short or long. Maxi style dresses are apt for formal events, while shorter styles are for casual evenings,” says Kedar.

Ethnic Indian wear is still sought after, though Indo-western and fusion wear are also gaining popularity. Kalamkari fabric, with the motifs highlighted and embellished with stones and thread work, is being used to make dresses or jackets and as borders.

Hyderabad-based designers Rahul Mishra and Firdos Samar of Rahul and Firdos have used traditional bandhini prints to create western outfits. Dresses, skirts, and tube tops figure in their line of reds, pinks, blues and greens.

Designer Puja Sahney suggests dresses with voluminous full sleeves. “I also recommend scarves and neck ties with dresses and boots for a complete look. Thicker fabrics such as tweeds and plaids are smart for skirts and dresses.” For an androgynous look to a regular outfit, Puja suggests a dress made out of suiting material.

It’s still not too late to get an outfit tailored to suit your style and needs. Quite a few department stores have launched a festive wear line, giving importance to evening wear. Shopper’s Stop, Lifestyle and Globus stock these lines.
