Rani
Jaishree Misra
Penguin Books
She is called Rani at home and so is her new book. Jaishree Misra’s fourth novel “Rani”, a historical fiction on the Rani of Jhansi, Lakshmibai, was released recently at the India Habitat Centre. Misra has drawn out the grainy black
and white picture frozen in school textbooks to trace the Rani’s journey from a carefree child to a young queen and finally the warrior. The year is also the 150th death anniversary of the 1857 martyrs.
The author, through a Power Point presentation, also brought alive the important places in Jhansi and its surroundings associated with the queen.
Sepia Leaves
Amandeep Sandhu
Tara Press
An intensely autobiographical tale about growing up in a broken home, living with a schizophrenic mother and coming to terms with reality. Amandeep Sandhu’s “Sepia Leaves” was launched during the Delhi International Arts Festival by
Nafisa Ali at the India Habitat Centre. Sandhu calls his debut work a “small note from a son to his parents.”
Though the novel is a child’s understanding of the dark world, it has the strains of a political and social novel. It also deals with mental illness. “It is a novel about my mother and her fate and of us who got caught in it as it was our kismat,” said Sandhu.
Beyond the Dunes – Journeys in Rajasthan
Juhi Sinha
Penguin Books
The book is meant to be a must for the weekend traveller to the desert State. It fills in a gap as far as books on Rajasthan go.
While most are coffee table tomes with exquisite pictures and little detail, Sinha’s book gives a peek into its people, their lives, ancient traditions and art forms. Released by Ambika Soni, Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, at The Ashok, the event was in itself a celebration of the spirit of Rajasthan.
