Devotional serial

The most successful reality show in Hindi, “Naach Baliye”, on Star Plus ended last Saturday. The channel found it difficult to fill that slot with another reality show so it has replaced the dance programme with a mythological serial R 20;Jai Maa Durga”, from December 29, 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Produced by Sagar Film, the serial is an adaptation of Durga Shaptshati. Says Prem Sagar: “It is a story of relationships and how circumstances affect them. It is a lesson on life with sage words from none other than the goddess herself. It is the story of good versus evil – the existence of both is important for maintaining the balance in the Universe but when evil becomes too strong, divine power has to intervene to save mankind.”

But whether a devotional serial can match the record breaking TRPs of a reality show is the big question.

Sharmila Tagore on TV

NDTV Imagine has managed to rope in Sharmila Tagore, former Bollywood queen and at present chief of the Censor Board, as a judge for its music reality show, “Dhoom Macha De”. Sharmila will judge the show along with ace music director Shankar Mahadevan and renowned lyricist and scriptwriter Prasoon Joshi. These eminent jury members along with the votes of the entire nation will adjudge the winner in the ultimate competition to uncover the country’s “Best LIVE Performer”. About her new role, Sharmila Tagore said, “I am really excited to judge ‘Dhoom Macha De’. It’s something I haven’t done before and am really looking forward to it.”

For the family

The competition among Tamil channels hots up, as serials are now being telecast almost round-the-clock. The afternoon 11.30 a.m. to 2 p.m. slot has more serials than ever before trying to grab the eyeballs of housewives. Now Kalaignar TV has come ou t with a new serial “Kalyanaparisu”. N. Jagan, writer of popular serials, directs it.

Says Jagan: “The crux of the story is marriages are made in heaven but matches are made on earth. The best way a marriage works is to have an understanding spouse and this is the premise on which the story works. Gayathri, Kavya and Varshini play important roles in the serial. The title track is sung by Nithyasri Mahadevan.”
