Sweet creations At the Nilgiri’s Cake Exhibition

Malaysia’s Petronas Twin Towers rise majestically to greet you as you enter the cake exhibition on at President Hall, Avanashi Road. Three master craftsmen from Nilgiri’s have put in 45 days of meticulous work to create this intricate pie ce of marvel in icing sugar. Standing tall at 8 ft, and a width of four feet, a whopping 1.5 tonnes of sugar went into its making.

Detailed

Novel themes and the annual cake expo of Nilgiri’s always go together. After the Eiffel Tower, Titanic and the World Trade Centre, this year they have re-created the magic. Be it the victory shield accompanied by a bouquet of flowers or the Cinderella coach drawn by two pairs of horses, every piece on display speaks of the painstaking attention to detail. The masterpiece, a veena, is a delight to see. Carved to perfection with 22 kg of sugar, it is true-to-life with its wooden finish. Beautiful lawns, a bread crumb flooring, door and windows, and birds sitting on the pebbles capture the beauty of Windsor castle.

Dinosaurs in various sizes catch your attention in the Jurassic Park model created using 17 kg of sugar. There are 10 such models, including a skeleton clock in yellow and brown, Tweety’s nest in pastel shades, a picture perfect aeroplane and a breathtaking passenger ship in yellow and black.

All 10 exciting models will be given away as gifts to the winners of a lucky dip to be conducted on January 1, the concluding day of the exhibition. The winners will also take home a 10-kg rich plum cake (worth Rs. 3,000) with a coating of almond paste All you need to do is to buy a ticket for Rs.10 (available at the venue).

B. Rajesh Khanna, Manager of Nilgiri’s Supermarket, says the exhibition brings together different varieties and flavours of cakes, all under one roof. “Along with the exhibits, we also have 150 varieties of cakes for sale,” he adds. On between 10 a.m. and 8.30 p.m.
