Guessing game A painting or a saree?
It was a Friday, and a holiday at that, but people came in droves at 11 in the morning on the opening day of The Hindu Metroplus Lifestyle Show.
That set the tone for the rest of the five-day shopping carnival. Over five days, more than 30,000 people walked into the well done up Codissia Trade Fair Complex, checked out what was on offer, and shopped till they dropped.
And, also stared happily at the star attractions — The Chennai Silks’ Rs. 40 lakh silk saree, in which weavers had painstakingly recreated paintings by Raja Ravi Varma, the Rs. 24-lakh 70-inch LCD TV displayed by Samsung, and the fridge with an attached television that Girias showcased.
And, then, there were perfumes, crockery, kitchen appliances, cars, and what not.
The Thais were a big hit with Coimbatoreans. Almost every other person went home bearing a stalk of artificial flowers made from natural materials, or a lamp shade or a trinket or an orchid flower clip.
On the concluding day on December 25, people seemed to be making a beeline to stalls to check out what was left, and add to their collection.
This time around, furniture was a big hit. Be it teak, rosewood, or cane, people bought, and then placed orders for more. Predictably, the high-end products did well.
But, so did the stalls selling supari, candied amla and other digestives, and those vending milkshake mixes and Mysore mixture. At the end of it all, everyone went back happy!
