Tribute to a dancer

A host of events to mark the first death anniversary of Chandralekha


December 30 marks the first anniversary of the passing away of dancer Chandralekha. In connection with it, a host of events has been planned by SPACES, the arts foundation founded by her. They will take place at No.1, Elliot’s Beach Road, ph: 0 44-24912177 or 99404 19444.

On December 30, 4 p.m. to 5.30 p.m., a new space for kalarippayattu, the Kerala martial/therapeutic form,

will be inaugurated by the kalari maestro, Vasu Gurukkal, from Kaduthuruthy near Kottayam, and his students will present a demonstration.

It will be followed by a poetry reading by Aftab Seth (part of the Prakriti Foundation’s Poetry Fest) between 6 p.m. and 6.45 p.m. and a Hindustani classical music concert, in Dhrupad style, by the Gundecha Brothers at 7.15 p.m.

On December 31, 10.30 a.m. to 1 p.m., a ‘baithak’ with friends from the artists’ community from various parts of India will be held to discuss the need for creating a pan-India forum for artistic solidarity.

On January 1, a full day and night will be dedicated to Kathakali. Celebrated artists and gurus of the form such as Kalamandalam Gopi and Ramankutty Nair and 30 other artists from Kerala, will perform.

There will be demonstrations of Kathakali movements, make up, costume and music between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

From 6.30 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day, three Kathakali performances — Nala Charitham, Kalyana Sougandhikam and Duryodhana Vadham — will be presented.

Besides, on December 30, 1.30 p.m., there will be a special screening of a 2003 documentary on Chandralekha, “Sharira” (28 minutes) by Ein Lall, on NDTV.
