INTRICATELY CARVED One of the pieces of furniture on display
Antique furniture, through its craftsmanship, gives us many lessons in history. The rosewood chiffonoir of which only 15-20 pieces were crafted in Pondicherry, some 200 years ago, the rosewood dressing-cum-writing table that has Victorian-style legs,
the carved Radha-Krishna and the graceful Burmese dragons supporting the mirror, the capacious English cupboard with patented John Watts (Sheffield) hangers, the rare chaise lounge with carved legs or the original rosewood 120-year old staircase…on display at Sri Vrikshalaya’s exhibition of Restored Antique Furniture take visitors down history lane. Also available is a range of antique Indian jhoolas, chests and beds, Victorian, Art deco and Jacobean furniture.
Edwardian and Victorian cupboards and chairs, rosewood planters, mirror consoles from the Raj era, carved side tables, Victorian love seats, single plank benches for verandah or garden, a range of single plank swings mounted on Chettinad pillars, a marble topped octagonal dining table with carved legs and an unusual 1920s stained glass window add variety to the display Intricately carved doors and door frames, staircase railings in rosewood and teak, and carved pillars attract attention.
The exhibition is on till January 6 at Sri Vrikshalaya, 19/9, Balaji Nagar, First Street, Royapettah.
