In the world of bliss

Lifestyle Not for nothing is an ayurvedic massage called sheer bliss!

ecstasy Ayurvedic therapy can be a great stress buster

It is something that pulls not only the westerners but increasingly Indian tourists too to the backwaters of Kerala. Ayurvedic treatments from that State, we all are aware, are said to be sheer bliss but till you experience it you don’t really know what bliss truly means. So here is a first-hand take on such an experience at the plush VLCC Spa in the Capital’s Basant Lok. As soon as you walk into one of the treatment rooms at the spa, a young woman, dressed in traditional Malyali attire, welcomes you in. The atmosphere is warm, and the smell of oil is wafting through the entire room. The temperature in the room is set to 35 degree Celsius. You shed your inhibitions and make yourself comfortable on the wooden massage table in the middle of the room.

Shirodhara

Your work ends here. And henceforth, the treatment takes over. The first one is the popular Shirodhara treatment, where warm sesame oil, infused with herbs, is gently poured over your forehead for a long time through the nose of a brass utensil hung right over your head. The oil works like a slow balm – its effects are known only with time. Eyes closed, you can feel your stress slipping away along with the oil dripping off your head. As you start enjoying this new feeling, thewarm sesame oil, along with other oils, are being rubbed all over your body. The therapist’s firm hands massage your body, giving you an out-of-the-world feeling. A long steaming hot cover is placed over you in such a manner that it doesn’t touch your body, but its steam pushes the oil into your skin. This treatment is known as Abhyangam. After letting you be for sometime in this bliss, the excess oil is cleaned off your body and you are free to get up.

The entire process lasts a little more than 45 minutes. For better effect, don’t wash off immediately.

Shirodhara is known to calm your nerves, reduce excessive thinking, improve sleep, reduce anxiety and relaxes the muscles, while Abhyangam helps improve the defence mechanism of the body and increases your immunity.

The cost

The cost for both Shirodhara and Abhyangam is Rs.2500. But either of the treatments can be enjoyed at Rs.1500, exclusive of taxes.

After experiencing these treatments, one really knows what it means when ayurvedic massages are called sheer bliss.
