|
DakshinaChitra organises a Village Festival from January 2 to 14 when the place will come alive to the rhythms, movements and colours of South India.
The festival, which coincides with the New Year celebration, has been designed to suit the holiday mood and there will be dancing all day – village style. Also this will be an opportunity to witness the varied folk art forms of South India, all at one place. Six folk dances representing the four southern states, sponsored by the South Zone Cultural Centre, will be presented.
Mathuri and Lambani from Andhra Pradesh and Thiruvathirakali and Oppana from Kerala will be performed between January 2 and 7; and Dollu Kunitha from Karnataka between January 9 and 13 and Mayilattam from January 9 to 14. The performances will take place at 11 a.m., 12 noon, 3.30 p.m. and 4.30 p.m. on all days.
The village festival will conclude with the celebration of Pongal on January 15, 16 and 17. The traditional Pongal making will take place on January 15 and some of the folk dances such as Mayilattam, Poikal Kudirai and Karagam will be performed.
There will also be craftspersons demonstrating their craft and selling their wares at the Bazaar inside DakshinaChitra.
