Life beyond the reel

Two films introduced Coimbatoreans to the works of filmmaker Krzysztof Kieslowski

Films are often multilayered and each layer can be interpreted in many ways,” said S. Anand of Konangal Film Society, before the screening of two short films by Polish master Krzysztof Kieslowski at Ashwin Hospital Auditorium. After seeing the films, one tended to agree.

Of relationships

‘Concert of wishes’, made by the filmmaker when he was a student at the Lodz Film School in 1967, revolves around a young couple on a motorcycle and a noisy group of youth in a bus.

The couple is in search of a lost identity card, and the bus driver promises to return it if the girl gets on to the bus.

By then, her boyfriend discovers the card, and pulls her out of the bus. They continue their journey. The film examines how an incident tests the couple’s relationship.

War of possession

‘Dekalog 7-Thou shalt not steal’ is one of the 10 movies made by the filmmaker based on the Ten Commandments.

This story revolves around a battle of possession among three women in a family. Grandmother Ewa, her unmarried daughter Majka, and Anie, the child born out of wedlock.

The daughter kidnaps Anie, who is being brought up as her sister. Majka flees to Canada with Anie to meet the child’s real father, a teacher. However, her family traces her to the railway station.

When she sees that her mother has come back for Anie, Majka boards the train, leaving the child with Ewa. In the final shot, the child seems to be in a dilemma as to where to go.

In the post-screening discussion, some described ‘Dekalog 7’ as a political drama which portrayed the impact of the Soviet rule in Poland, when people were even curtailed from claiming children as their own.
