Year of remixes
The year 2007 was one of remixes in Kollywood. At the last count, there were nearly a dozen remixes of yesteryear films. The most successful remix numbers of the year were ‘Engeyum Eppodhum….’ from “Polladhavan”, with mu
sic by G.V. Prakash, and ‘Ponmagal Vanthaal’ from “Azhagiya Tamil Magan” remixed by Prakash’s uncle A. R. Rahman! Says Suchitra, singer and Radio One hostess: “Nothing much has changed in Tamil film music. You have a ‘koothu paatu’ to introduce the hero, a peppy song for the heroine, and to show the hero’s heroism in the climax, there is one praising his deeds. Last year, the only remarkable thing to have happened is classic songs taking a new avatar in the form of remixes.” A whole new generation is getting hooked on remix songs, as most of them are being picturised in the music video format and repeatedly shown on TV. Now, producers, and directors of films which are under production, are trying to acquire the rights of old songs!
