Maternal health
The improvement in rural maternal health services in Tamil Nadu was impressive in 2007 due to the sound implementation of the national and state government’s rural health programmes. For example, in Vellore district, the deliveries in PHCs have
gone up from 248 in January 2007 to 1,132 in October 2007. The percentage of rural women who go to private hospitals for delivery has come down leading to less expenditure. Such improvement is less visible in urban areas. In 2008, I want better public services (like water, housing, education and health) for the rural and urban poor, especially poor women. I hope to see the 33 per cent reservation passed, and a change in social attitudes towards caste and gender.
