Freedom and responsibility


Kiran Desai winning a prestigious international award made me happy and the Taslima Nasreen incident left me sad. Why can’t we sit and discuss issues instead of condemning someone or filing unnecessary cases? Writers should also be responsible when they write. I wrote a novel about a young bride being harassed by her husband in the U.S. 25 years ago, and a similar case was reported recently. It is shocking. In 2008, I wish women would take charge of their life and live with self-respect. Society should be sensitive and committed to women’s rights. Today, there is a lack of awareness.
