HER 2007 WHAT WOMEN WANT ASHA S. MENON
A significant year
What was the year 2007 like for women? We ask women who work in different fields, including those who work for women’s rights.
For the disabled, 2007 has been significant. India was one of the first signatories to the United Nations Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities, ratified on October 1, 2007. Besides affirming equal rights for women, it urges nation states to implement measures that ensure women enjoy all human rights and fundamental freedoms fully and equally; ensure their full development, advancement and empowerment; and ensure that instances of exploitation, violence and abuse are identified and investigated. Awareness, understanding and acceptance of disabilities have increased. For example, the disabled heroine of the blockbuster Tamil movie “Mozhi” is no sob sister, but a fierce fighter for her rights. Self-confidence and economic independence are of utmost importance for all women, not just those with disabilities. In 2008, I hope the mass media, particularly television soaps, projects less sati savitris and more women who are strong and competent.
