SOUND OFF

‘Blame yourself’

Techie Ashwanth Gnanavelu is furious at people’s disrespect for public transport and lack of civic sense

I have always advocated a strong public transport system (PTS) for easing the rise of private vehicles on the shrinking city roads. The administration is blamed for the quality of the services, which does not encourage many to choose the PTS.

However, after frequent travelling in trains, share autos, buses (State-run and private ones) in the last one year, I can say that, we the passengers are equally responsible for making our public transport an unattractive option. We as a community lack discipline. Adherence to rules, respect to public property, seem to be a non-issue. Simple things like waiting for the passengers to get down , then enter, rather than barge in and block the way; follow a queue, are mostly unheard of. Once at a train reservation counter, as my turn came, someone from the side just whisked passed the queue and thrust his hand into the counter. To him, it was just a survival of the fittest. Thankfully, he was refused the ticket. Just as I am writing this, in a crowded train, I see someone dropping the remains of their food in the compartment and spitting out through the window. The condition of the toilets needs no mention. Lack of civic sense is one thing, but an ‘I-don’t–care’ attitude for public property is what is frustrating. We seem to be oblivious to the fact that we are the ones who litter a public space. Worse, we have grown so insensitive that such issues are hardly seen as wrong. With regular travellers taking such incongruities as a part of life, no amount of effort from the system can bring about a change.
