It’s not that cold yet

Hyderabad’s still awaiting winter that’s yet to come in full swing

Bright and sunny A dose of the sun this winter

Come December and it’s time for chills and thrills. But not this time as Hyderabadis found out, much to their disappointment. The chill winter that’s usually at its peak around this time of the year is yet to arrive in the city. At a time when most people of the city would have expected to be swathed in blankets, quilts and jerkins, this year for a change, they are turning on their fans and coolers to escape the unpleasantly hot ‘winter nights.’ Unlike other Christmas seasons, the sweaters, the jerkins and other winter wear are missing this year.

Sam, a student seems to be missing that magic of winter as he says, “This year winter wasn’t winter at all. Comparatively, I think this season was an utter disaster, very disappointing.” Winter in a way brings warmth into our lives - the lazy mornings, the cool winds that fill the air, the mantle of the fog, people dressed in their winter wear: the full sleeve flannel shirts, sweaters, thermals, quilts, mittens, scarves and stoles - all these are what fill us with happiness every winter season.

“The magic of winter just hasn’t come this year; the cold mornings, when you don’t feel like waking up, when you simply want to lie in your bed, covered in thick, warm blankets and have a cup of hot tea, they simply haven’t come this year. Every year during winter, you generally don’t feel like going to college. But this year, there’s nothing of the sort,” moans Srikanth an engineering student.

Those real chilly mornings that we all crave for have still not come. Except for a few cold days, the winter this year has been atypically warm. “Every year once Deepavali is over the winter starts and it’s almost chilly by Christmas time. But this year strangely we are sweating even on Christmas night. Actually for the past few nights, I couldn’t even think of sleeping without fan,” says Lakshmi, a school teacher.

Others rue the fact that they’ve been unable to wear their favourite winter clothes this season. Girikanth, an administrator at Gandhi Hospital, says: “The best part about winter is you get a chance to put on your stylish new jacket, your jerkin and other winter wear. But this year, you would look like a fool wearing winter clothes on a sunny morning. Only the early mornings and late nights have been actually cold. I bought a brand new jacket, but the only chance I get to wear them is when I’m on my bike and that too only in the night time.”

Hyderabad has been witnessing a change of sorts: rains that are uncharacteristically late, shorter spells of summer, it’s like we’re witnessing a totally different climate all together. Some see a warning sign in this of a larger impending disaster. “The polar ice caps are melting; the summers are getting hotter; rainfalls are occurring in the deserts; all these are warning signals that we ignore at our own peril. Global warming is taking its toll on mankind,” sums up a colleague in a grave tone.
