Learning from movies

Academic Aamir Khan and Darsheel Safary

Rajagiri Public School and Aamir Khan’s ‘Taare Zameen Par’: Now, what’s the link? First a bit about the movie, which incidentally is Aamir Khan’s directorial debut as well. ‘Taare Zameen Par’ is a peek into the world of a dyslexic child. Ishaan, the film’s eight-year-old protagonist is dyslexic, academics do not figure in his scheme of things. His world is populated by colours, fish, kites rather than homework and marks. In a world where a child is gauged by academic performance, Ishaan gets punished by his exasperated teachers. Eventually he does find a sensitive teacher (Aamir Khan) who works with him and helps him.

So where does Rajagiri Public School figure in all this? Here is how: The management of the Rajagiri school has made it compulsory for all teachers of the school, from kindergarten right up to Class XII to watch the film. “This is to sensitise them to such children if they come across them,” says Shini Cyriac, headmistress, Rajagiri Kindergarten. The teachers will be heading for the noon show of the film today.
