Four Frames

Ready for Pongal

At last some good news for superstar Vikram, who did not have any releases in the last two years! His film “Bheema”, directed by Lingusamy, is at last ready for release this Pongal, after it got an ‘A’ certificate from the cen sors on December 31. “Bheema” has Trisha as heroine with Prakash Raj playing the bad guy. The music by Harris Jayaraj, released a few months back, is already rocking the charts. “Bheema” carries excellent pre-release reports and is said to be an edge-of-the-seat thriller that is technically awesome.

Year of remixes

The year 2007 was one of remixes in Kollywood. At the last count, there were nearly a dozen remixes of yesteryear songs. The most successful remix numbers of the year were ‘Engeyum Eppodhum….’ from “Polladhavan”, with mu sic by G.V. Prakash, and ‘Ponmagal Vanthaal’ from “Azhagiya Tamil Magan” remixed by Prakash’s uncle A. R. Rahman! Says Suchitra, singer and Radio One hostess: “Nothing much has changed in Tamil film music. You have a ‘koothu paatu’ to introduce the hero, a peppy song for the heroine, and to show the hero’s heroism in the climax, there is one praising his deeds. Last year, the only remarkable thing to have happened is classic songs taking a new avatar in the form of remixes.” A whole new generation is getting hooked on remix songs, as most of them are being picturised in the music video format and repeatedly shown on TV. Now, producers, and directors of films under production are trying to acquire the rights of old songs!

Historical postponed

Ashutosh Gowarikar’s much-awaited film “Jodhaa Akbar” continues to make news. It is the untold love story of the Mughal Emperor Akbar (played by Hrithik Roshan) and a fiery, young Rajput princess, Jodhaa (Aishwarya Rai), with some g reat music by A.R. Rahman. The film, produced by UTV, is to be dubbed into Tamil and Telugu. It was originally scheduled for release during Diwali but, later, postponed to January 25. Last week, it was again postponed to Valentine’s Day weekend on February 15. Now it is learnt that one of the five songs, a ‘qawwali’, is to be deleted due to the film’s long duration — 3 hours and 50 minutes!

Daringly different

Remember director Jayaraj, who has made meaningful Malayalam films such as “For the People” and “By the People”. He is now back with the last in the series “Of the People”. Jayaraj continues with his vigilante theme; the story is about how the new generation launches a crusade against corruption and injustice in high places. The film stars newcomers and the technicians too are young hands. “Of the People”, which released on Friday, is expected to be another trail blazer from Jayaraj.
