HIFF-2008 Swiss film-maker Peter Luisi believes in making entertaining films

Movies for fun Peter Luisi
There’s a general notion that film festivals don’t reach out to the larger section of people. Festival movies are not about suicides, death and poverty. There are films that can make you smile and laugh,” says Peter Luisi, Swiss-born film-maker. Peter succeeded in doing that on the third day of the Hyderabad International Film Festival.
His film, Love Made Easy, is about five friends who are unlucky in love. “They are basically losers. Then one of them falls in love and the others help him get the woman. That is easier said than done. None of these guys understand women and they find themselves caught in funny situations – from dealing with strippers to baby sitters. The film is a romantic comedy,” says Luisi. Sounds like a kitschy Hindi film? “I haven’t seen too many Indian films. But given a chance, I’d like to work in a co-production,” says Luisi. The film-maker considers Charlie Chaplin as his idol and admits, “It’s an art to make people laugh and comedies are as important as art house films.”
In fact, Luisi’s previous films have also been slice-of-life movies and light-hearted ones at that. Vitus, released in 2006, is about a boy going against his parents wishes and following his dreams. Luisi says, “I like happy endings myself and I shall keep my films that way. You should go to movies and see something positive, and take back the energy into your own life. For me, movies are about life, love and happiness.” Admitting that he is a romantic at heart, he says his next film will be a tragic-comedy, “but not something that will make people weep.”
This is Luisi’s second visit to India and the first to the South. He brushes aside talks about the ongoing film festival being a tad too disorganised and says, “That’s bound to happen anywhere in the world. I’ve been to places where it would be the 50th year of the film festival and still there is some amount of confusion. What’s important is the enthusiasm and support of people you get at these film festivals.”
