Japan in India

When life was in black and white, there were only a few places in Delhi where we could go for a Chinese, Japanese or Thai meal. We had Aka Saka and Chungwa in Defence Colony, Fujiya on Malcha Marg and Ginza at Connaught place. But a lot of excitement was caused by a new kid on the block, called Ikko bar and restaurant that came up at 6/48 Malcha Marg, Chanakya Puri, barely a month ago. It offers authentic Japanese, Chinese and Thai food. But it’s not for typical Indian food lovers as it doesn’t serve Indian food at all. Among non-vegetarian starters dim sum, Chinese lamb wraps, prawn Ikko style, fried prawn with oyster sauce are good options.

The teriyaki chickentastes great. They have maki tuna fish as an added attraction. In vegetarian starters one can zero in on mushroom pok choy dumpling and fresh mushrooms.

For the main course they dish out exciting options like Japanese prawn dishes like kaisen udon or Koong phad, or a saucy affair from Thailand called tomkha phak, which is made with coconut milk and lemon grass. Thailand ginger, which is a coconut base soup with fresh exotic vegetables, lemon juice and salt, is mouth-watering. For those having a sweet tooth, banana cinnamon pancake is a good option.

A meal for two would cost Rs.1500.
