At the Street Food and Dessert festival, you can relive forgotten flavours

Delectable fare At That’s Y Food
I still remember the tanginess of the first shikanji I sipped 10 years ago in North India. Memories of that day came flooding when the desi lemonade with a drizzle of spices was served at That’s Y Food, R. S. Puram.
The restaurant, known for its Mughlai and Continental food, is now hosting a ‘Street Food and Dessert festival’. And, going by the response from diners, it looks like Coimbatore is going gaga over luchi, vada-paav and ras omelette. And, happily slurping shikanji, badam milk redolent of saffron, and masala cola.
Though the fest is a la carte, to make things easier for us, Ranjana Singhal, who runs the restaurant, has come up with regional platters, representing Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bihar, Goa and Hyderabad, and fusion food.
We start off with a deliciously flavoured stuffed chilli enveloped in a thin coating of batter, and deep-fried. Bliss! Those who’ve never tasted Mumbai’s vada pav must check it out here. It looks like a burger, but has more character and bite to it. And, the fiery chilli paste adds to the whole experience.
Delicious
The spicy tamatar chane ki chaat from Bihar is a great looker. And, it tastes great too. Do try the plump Raj kachodi, filled with a delectable mixture of diced cucumber, veggies and sev.
Fusion chaat is something new. The first in this platter is palak
patta papdi chaat, a textured delicacy, crunchy at times and chewy at others.
This comes lathered with sev, and a creamy concoction. Check out the Mexican bhel, rich with potatoes, kidney beans, crushed nachos, and a drizzling of cheese.
My pick is the warm double ki chaat from Hyderabad, fried potato-layered bread served with a rich garnish. The chaats are the creation of Samta Gupta who grew up imbibing Kolkata’s famous street food culture.
Chocolate delights
Once you are through with this, get ready to binge on chocolate in myriad forms. And, these delights have all been made by Rangeeta Murada Rikhi using German chocolate.
Forget your diet for a while, and feast on Ferrero Rocher cake, garnished with roasted hazelnut, and walnut cake. Then, there is the amazingly good looking litchi cheesecake, garnished with a bed of preserved fruit. And, lots more. Such as smoothies and cheesecakes.
The basic regular menu will also be available during the festival.
The fest is on for lunch and dinner, on all days, till January 13. Check out www.thatsyfood.com for details, or call 0422-4365117/8.
