A slice of Kerala

Event Drums, dances and delicious fare marked the festivities

Singarimelam entertaining the visitors

The nostalgic Kani Kaanum Neram fills the air, as you enter the SNR auditorium, the venue of Kerala Virunnu. Soon, people dressed in traditional Kerala attire trickle in. Add to it the announcement of ‘simbly chaai’ from the food counter, and you are already in the land of backwaters.

For a good cause

The event put together by Rotary Coimbatore Spectrum is the fourth in the Taste of India series, organised every year to raise funds for a cause. “After capturing the spirit of Tamil Nadu, Goa and Rajasthan, this year it is Kerala all the way,” says the chairperson Rajkanth Ramanujam. The money generated from the event will be used to educate rural girl children as part of Senbagam project, formed by Rotary to work for their upliftment.

If entertainment programmes brought alive the colourful culture, the gourmet fare took the people on a culinary trip. Exotic dishes including pazham pori, kappa, appam, Kottayam style fish curry, chemeen fry, Malabar chicken curry were available at the Virunnu.

The morning session was kept aside for singarimelam, kalari demo, puliaattam, kaikotti kali and Thirvathuirakali and in the evening it was the turn of melam, mohiniattam, and kathakali performances to take over.

When the members of Singarimelam troupe took centre stage, what followed was 60 minutes of non-stop power packed performance. As the chenda artists from Kerala danced to the beats of the drums strapped to their left shoulders by a long rope, members in the audience swayed to the lively percussion, something traditionally performed during the temple festivals. The drum beats reverberated in the auditorium long after the performance was over.
