When it debuted in 2006, it changed the landscape of rock music in India, and now back with its second edition, Jack Daniel’s Legendary Mash Annual Rock Awards is set to dazzle the Capital yet again. The month-long extravaganza was kicked off a t a press conference at Café Morrison recently where the winning trophy was unveiled in presence of the sponsors, participating bands and jury members.

This year, the awards saw 193 bands from across India sending their entries, and only five of them, short-listed by the jury, have been nominated for various categories. The grand award ceremony is to be held on February 1 at Ministry of Sounds. Here, the band of the year award will be announced along with the winners of other categories like best song, best album, best vocalist, best guitarist, best bass player, best keyboard player and the drummer of the year. The best band will get to fly to Lynchburg, Tennessee, to participate in the international grand finale, with bands from around the globe.

All the best!

Judging the best will not be an easy task, considering that each nominated member is one of the best in India, especially when you have bands like Parikrama, Thermal And A Quarter, Junkyard Groove, Menwhopause and Them Clones contesting for the title. The jury panel comprises well-known names like Rahul Ram of Indian Ocean, Vehrnon Ibrahim of Millennium, Craig Fernandes, Gino Banks – drummer and son of Louis Banks, guitarist and bassist Paresh and Naresh Kamath.

What made the launch special was that it coincided with the birth anniversary of King of rock-n-roll, Elvis Presley. Musician Nikhil Mawkin, with the typical Elvis hairstyle, paid homage to the man by singing a couple of his popular numbers, namely, “It’s Now or Never” and “Jailhouse Rocks”.

“It couldn’t have been more apt considering that Elvis and Jack Daniel come from the same place - Tennessee,” said Amrit Kiran Singh, Area Director and VP, Brown-Forman Worldwide.

Music will continue to cast its spell as part of the awards, where 50 bands will perform at 15 gigs organised at different watering holes in the city. The audience too can cast vote either by filling the nomination form available at Café Coffee Day outlets and pubs or at the website, www.indianrockawards.com.
