Image trap
In Kollywood, a superstar’s on-screen image is what works with the fans. A recent study by a market research team has found that on Tamil television too the image of the protagonist (all women) is what attracts eyeballs. Recently, Kalaignar TV
tried to take on the market leader, Sun TV’s 9.30 prime time ‘number one’ serial, Radhika’s “Arasi”, with Kushboo’s “Namma Kudumbum” . However, Radhika’s larger-than-life mother and daughter act in “Arasi” won the battle of TRPs. Says a leading market consultant: “Over the years, Radhika has portrayed a no-nonsense tough talking woman who triumphs against all odds and this factor has endeared her to the women who watch television soaps. Yet, when she tried to play a coy and submissive housewife in ‘Kannamoochi Yaenada’, she was not accepted. Similarly, Kushboo has a different image as the friendly and fashionable hostess of the game show ‘Jackpot’ (Jaya TV) which went totally against the character she played in ‘Namma Kudumbum’. In soaps which depend entirely on women, the viewer is rooted to the character’s image and it is better that it is not tinkered with.”
