Impressive Attempt to be different
Ram had the guts to handle a meaty subject on his debut, ‘Katradhu Tamil.’ And he says he never felt it was a heavy theme for a debutant until the tinsel industry gave him the feedback.
“A film director is also a part of the society, just like any other individual. I have the opportunity to bring on screen, through my script, the distress faced by people. ‘Katrathu …’ was about a Tamil graduate’s frustration towards the society,” he says.
Different stories
Ram believes that Tamil fans are looking for different stories these days and it is up to the directors to come up with fresh ideas.
“Unlike earlier times, audience is nowadays attracted more towards English cinema, thanks to the CD’s and DVD’s that are readily available. They expect some novel scripts in Tamil films as well and we have to cater to their needs. My first movie is a step in that direction,” he details.
Ram was all praise for Jeeva and says that the actor’s performance in the flick was “excellent.”
“Jeeva has the willingness to do challenging roles. And the amount of hard work he puts in is indeed commendable. He has got a great future ahead.”
Ram does not want to get into the debate of whether the film was a success, but says that since the movie was city-based it did well in the ‘A’ centres. “A good film can never be judged based on the business it does,” he adds.
His teacher
Ram, who has worked under Balu Mahendra, says that he has never come across such a teacher in the film industry.
“I take pride in the fact that I am the legend’s student. I spent some very useful years with him and learnt lessons that are invaluable.”
He was also quick to mention that an assistant needs to have very good grasping power, especially when working under Balu Mahendra.
Ram says that he would try his best to bring out a different theme in his next venture, the announcement for which he intends to make by this month-end.
Ram also has interest in making documentaries, impressed that he is by some of the works of foreign directors.
“I want to do some quality documentaries. I will bide my time.”
