Mitigation
It is distressing to note that the recent rain has left behind a trail of death and destruction in the State. While loss of life, property and damage to crops is inevitable during rains of such magnitude, the damage could have been mitigated to a considerable extent if only some preventive steps were taken. For instance, it was official indifference at its worst, when the weeds were hastily removed from the course of the Uyyakondan river during battering rain. The drainage system in the city was totally exposed as all the arterial roads witnessed rainwater stagnation posing a health hazard to people. Similarly, no ground work on the need to channelise rain water resulted in crop inundation causing huge loss to farmers. It is time the government heeded the clarion call of experts in the matter of flood control.
