‘Please fix this road’

Rock musician Eddie Prithiviraj on how a bad road made him a better motorist

I can go dirt-bike racing, thanks to a sewer that runs right in the middle of the road in front of my house in Chemman Nagar, Pallavaram. I love Pallavaram. It is a beautiful place, except for the roads that are bad. The road in front of my house was dug up six months ago to lay the line and it was done two months ago, but nobody bothered to fill up the ditch. So, in my efforts to to avoid falling into it, I have become a better biker. I cannot take my car out onto th e road, because it is not wide enough anymore. So I gingerly ferry myself and my pregnant wife on my two-wheeler across this precarious stretch.

Over the months, the residents of this road have come to stoically accept the situation. Sometimes the ditch overflows with sewage; sometimes we help one another out of it and some like me keep an extra pair of shoes in the office.

But, people who visit us have a tough time. A few days ago, I was leading a few friends to my house on my bike and they were following in their’s. I reached home, but discovered they weren’t behind me. I walked back and found them in the ditch. They did return to their homes safe, but not before a bath and appreciating my driving skills.

Yesterday, we lost half a tanker lorry of water because it fell into the ditch and the only way to pull it out was to empty half of it. I wish the local authorities would attend to the sewerage problem and fill the ditch.
