A round-up of special programmes for the Pongal festival

Pongal is the biggest festive season on Tamil channels which means continuous special programmes and films for two days, January 15 and 16. It is also a time when channels record high TRPs depending on the content. A look at what the channels have in
store for the festive season.
Vijay TV
Some of the highlights on Pongal Day (January 15) are “Kalakal Mandram”, which is a spoof of Pattimandram, featuring Sethu, Jeeva and Badava Gopi, a special episode of “Koffee with Anu” where Anu will chat with actors Prabhu Deva and Sangeetha with Bollywood actors Salman Khan and Sridevi speaking on the dancing sensation. Following this is an interview with Chiyaan Vikram where he shares his “Bheema” experience. Next will be “Oru peppy payanam” where Vikram’s “Bheema” co-star Trisha goes down memory lane and pays a visit to her school, college, meets friends and celebrates the harvest festival. Then there is “Jodi Pongal” where the Vijay Jodis pay a visit to a village and celebrate the festival with the people there. This will be followed by “Mudhalvan Shankar”, an interview with the showman of Kollywood. At 2 p.m., “Independence Day”, a science fiction film, will premiere in Tamil.
Jaya TV
The action starts on Bhogi Day (January 14), with the live telecast of “Makara Jyothi” from 4.30 p.m. In the night, the fun starts with the director of “Palani” interviewing its hero Bharath. It is followed by “Bheemavin Beemakkal”, where Vikram is interviewed by Lingusamy, its director. On Pongal Day, there will be interviews with Prakash Raj, Surya, Ramya, K. S. Ravi Kumar and Mani Sharma, and screening of two movies the ‘Jayam’ Ravi-Shriya starrer “Mazhai” at 2 p.m. and the Surya-Jyothika starrer “Khakka Khakka” at 8 p.m. On Mattu Pongal Day (January 16), there are interviews with Sandhya, ‘Jayam’ Ravi and Simbu. Ganja Karuppu will sing with folk artists from “Paruthiveeran”. There will be a feature on “Jallikkatu” in Tamil films. Then “Dreams” featuring Dhanush and Dhiya will be telecast. In the evening, viewers will be treated to Ilaiyaraja’s concert “Andrum Indrum Endrum”.
Kalaignar TV
On Pongal Day (January 16), there’s an impressive line up of interviews with Vikram, Trisha, Bharat, Cheran, Dhanush, Prakash Raj and Shruthi Hassan. Viewers can watch films “Thullal” at 2.30 p.m. and the television premiere of Vasanthabalan’s “Veyil” featuring Bharath, Bhavana and Pasupathi. Mattu Pongal Day will feature a series of interviews with Nayanthara, Bhavana, Lingusamy, Simbu, Vinay and an Ilaiyaraja show. “Muthal Muthalai” at 2.30 p.m. and Parthipan’s “Ammuvagiya Naan” (TV premiere) at 6 p.m. are some of the movies to be screened.
SS Music
SS Music celebrates Pongal in a big way. On Bhogi Day, there is a good mix of literary and film-based programmes. It starts with a half-hour episode about Chennai’s Annual Book Fair. Next is a tribute to Sahitya Akademi Award-winning Tamil poet Puviarasu. In the night there is a special programme “Pongal – what it means to non-Tamils?” On Pongal Day (January 15) watch a round up of “Chennai Sangamam” and the “Mylapore Festival”. Added to that there are film-based interviews with Padmapriya, Charmi, previews of Pongal releases and a two-hour special tribute to Ilaiyaraja, “Paadava Un Paadalai”, with SPB and Chitra rendering the maestro’s hits.
