He and his teachings Joseph Costa in New Delhi
He was merely in the crib when he saw many eyes gazing at him. He grew up thinking that these three men who came visiting only at bedtime were his uncles, a part of his extended family, but it wasn’t long before he discovered otherwise. These
men were “the guiding spirits and angels”, who had descended on earth to be his teachers. For Joseph Costa, mystic author, lecturer and founder of the Institute of Thought in San Diego, U.S., it is a reality he has to live with.
“I was barely three or four years old when I realised the truth about them. My grandmother was the only one who knew about it. I somehow knew that I better keep quiet about it,” says Costa, whose dishevelled white hair adds to the queerness.
Rare learning
He says it’s a secret he lived with for 40 years, something even his wife and three kids were unaware of for a long time. “These masters guided me throughout my life, in every step I took. They kept me away from school but I didn’t mind as they taught me things which no school can ever teach. At the age of 13, I was learning about world politics. I knew what was happening in different parts of the world and all about the military,” says Costa, who hails from a poor Portuguese family.
Despite having no formal degree, he claims those teachings helped him scale heights, and allowed him to do different things. Soldier, bank executive and successful real estate businessman, who stood for the Mayor’s post are some of his other facets.
But it was only when he was 40 years old that he finally came out with his thoughts in public. “I was asked by my teachers to go back to college to study so that I could write books and spread my thought,” says the doctorate holder in transpersonal hypnotherapy and the author of several books on these subjects.
His various thoughts converged to give birth to a method which he calls the 15th Step Process. This, he claims, allows the common man to communicate with masters and angels. Currently, he goes around the world teaching people through workshops. “I was the chosen one. My soul chose to be on earth to help others. The world is moving towards a big change in 2012. It is a process of evolution, where only the fittest will survive. My job is to guide people to pass that phase without any difficulty. ”
No expectations
As you listen to this captivating 84-year-old, with a voice and gestures that are best suited to a storyteller, you realise it is not always about believing or disbelieving — sometimes you just don’t judge. “I don’t expect people to believe me. I know there are many who think I am crazy but why should I bother?” he remarks.
Religion has nothing to do with his line of thought, though it has everything to do with prayer and meditation. “No god ever had a religion. It is what people made out from their teachings. True religion always preaches oneness, but human beings fail to understand that. In my lifetime, 180 million people have killed each other. That says it all,” he sighs.
