Always positive

CINEMA The actor with the cutest smile loves roles with shades of grey

Charming Abbas

The Premadesam juggernaut has stream-rolled over everything that came in its way in 1996. It was the most memorable grab for Abbas. Ten years later, Abbas looks the same, charming and chic.

The soft-spoken actor says he doesn’t consider Premadesam his greatest film but the recent Anasuya and the yet to be released Idi Sangati have given him immense satisfaction.

Ask Abbas about the inconsistent career graph and he explains, “I’m basically a content person but moody, I might do eight films sometimes, one film and sometimes nothing at all. The biggest battle is within me, I don’t have to compete with bank balances, number of hits, cars etc. I always take off when I feel like. I don’t need to compete with other people.

I’ll do films on my terms and conditions, whatever role it might be. Also my PR skills are poor, once my shooting is done I stay at home and watch TV, there is no socialising, don’t take producers and directors for dinner. I guess you got to be there and when the opportunity comes we got to grab it, that’s exactly what I’m doing”.

Abbas browses the Internet in his free time and watches all foreign language films. “I also do a lot of biking and now I want to go on a world tour on the bike before I turn 35, meet new people and I’m looking forward to new experiences. I had a Yamaha Phazer 1000cc, I’m now planning to pick up a 2008 model.”

The actor lives with his family in Chennai and speaks Tamil fluently, though his Telugu is little jerky. He has worked with some very talented stars like Tabu, Aishwarya, Mammooty. He talks about his rapport with them. “I’m very fond of her, she is a good friend and we’ve worked in three films. With Aishwarya there wasn’t much interaction in Kandukondein Kandukondein but all I know is she is a very warm and caring person. People say she is artificial but that’s not true at all. Mammooty is known to be a serious person but I always pull his leg, he treats me like a younger brother. One interesting thing is all the heroines who have worked with me have reached the top. An elderly person once told me that I would always give out positive vibes; even if someone were to dislike me, eventually he would change for the better. I tried it on and did become true.”
