EXPERTISE Radha: ‘We have a master baker, who can artistically transform even a plain cake into one for a celebration’

Patel’s Bakers and Confectioners in Central Excise Layout, at the Tanisandra Main Cross, captures your attention with its colourful canopy first. And then when you pass by, you are beckoned by the attractive display of pastries and cakes that c an be distinctly seen through the transparent glass wall.

This eight-month-old place is started by Radha Patel, who also runs the Ashraya High School in Cottonpet. The lady started this bakery out of “sheer passion and also because my father was a baker. We grew up amidst the bakers and know the ins and outs of this business. It was very easy for me to start this bakery,” explains Radha, who works in her school in the mornings and in her bakery in the evenings. “When I am at school, my husband takes care of this place,” explains Radha, who chose this particular place for, it is closer to her residence.

The best part about this bakery is that everything is made fresh and in limited quantity. So you can pick up anything you want at a first come first served basis. “The reason why we make things in a limited quantity is that we do not want to keep anything for the next day. Even the raw material that goes in here is of superior quality,” explains Radha, with great pride.

At Patel’s Bakers you can pick up those melt-in-the-mouth pastries or cakes that come in the flavours of strawberry, chocolate, butterscotch or pineapple. Each piece is priced between Rs. 15 to Rs. 18. “The idea is to also provide people a good value for their money,” adds Radha. And true to her words, a sandwich or a veg roll or a veg pizza, all priced between Rs. 10 and Rs. 25. The rolls or the pizzas come in quite a large size with plenty of vegetables and butter and is quite filling. There are also rolls with mushrooms and paneer. “We avoid non-veg for there are many vegetarians here. But we do provide egg puffs and sandwiches or burgers” adds Radha. A specialty at this place is the date, chocolate, milk or banana roll, which is a big hit with the children.

Recently Radha started the chaat section where you can savour samosas, bhel or sev puri and so on, again priced at Rs. 10.

“Everything is made right here and good refined oil is used and we do not reuse the same oil again. So you will get crisp and good mixtures along with Bengali sweets too,” says Radha, as she takes you around the sweets and chaat section. The Bengali sweets are priced at Rs. 180 and above for a kilo.

She highly recommends the Italian rusk (loaded with dry fruits) and the baker’s special rusks (with oodles of butter and paneer).

“Our specialty is birthday cakes. We have a master baker, who can artistically transform even a plain cake into one for a celebration, depending on the customer’s budget, says Radha.

She is willing to take on orders for parties and birthdays where she will provide for the caps, plates, cakes, and one snack. “But the order has to be for at least 50 persons,” she adds.

Radha soon plans to add in a live jalebi and pav bhaji counter too. Patel’s Bakers and confectioneries is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. everyday and can be contacted 9880416386/988416722.
