NISHAGANDHI FESTIVAL

Cultural fiesta

The extravaganza includes classical dance and music recitals, Kathakali performances, a food festival and an exhibition of handicrafts

Grace Yamini Reddy

January begins the season of festivals in the city. Residents get to choose from a wide spectrum of cultural activities, right from films and theatre to music and dance recitals. No sooner does one get over than the next one begins. After the Kuthira malika experience, it is now time to make a beeline to the Kanakakunnu Palace grounds for the rich palette of programmes organised by the Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala. The Nishagandhi Festival will begin on January 20 and conclude on January 26.

Partner State Maharashtra will put up a cultural show on all the days of the festival at the Sooryakanthi Fair Ground.

Kathakali

While Nishgandhi open-air auditorium will host a plethora of music and dance programmes, Kanakakunnu Palace will see Kathakali performances from 6.30 to 9.30 p.m. ‘Kalyanasaugandhikam,’ ‘Rugmangada Charitham,’ ‘Keechaka Vadham,’ ‘Lavanasura Vadham,’ ‘Duryodhana Vadham,’ ‘Nalacharitham Onaam Divasam’ and ‘Dakshayagam’ will be staged during the fete.

Recitals by up-and-coming young talents will also be held at Nishagandhi open-air theatre from 6.30 to 7.30 p.m.

While the programmes promise to provide food for the soul, ‘Flavours of India,’ a food fair at Sooryakanthi, promises to provide food for the body. Bite into spicy eats from Chettinad and Punjab. The best of Moghali and Kerala cuisines will also be there.

Sooryakanthi will also be the venue for an arts and crafts mela that will showcase the best of handicrafts from Kerala.
