Out of traffic Neetu Chandra in New Delhi
She got her early break because she reminded well-known director Madhur Bhandarkar of the legendary Smita Patil. The consequent film, Traffic Signal, proved to the world that she was not a one film wonder. Remember, her first film
was Garam Masala with Priyadarshan where she played an airhostess.
Actress Neetu Chandra recalls that when Priyadarshan called her for the film, she could not recognise his voice on the phone. Now, she smiles thinking about the incident sitting at Noida’s Marwah Studio. Of course, she can afford to laugh about these things today, because her career is going places. She is busy signing films with proven directors, and some upcoming ones too. Actually, Neetu is in town for the shooting of her film Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye. But she is quick to recollect her initial days, especially during the shooting of Traffic Signal. She donned loud make-up and wore a dishevelled look to fit the character in Traffic Signal. There were a number of girls vying for the role until Bhandarkar decided to cast her. Today, she is doing films with Dibakar Bannerji and Rahul Dholakia, both of whom had successful outings last time with films like Khosla ka Ghosla and Parzania. Clad in a black and white skirt, top and a cap, Neetu says, “I give 100 per cent to whatever I undertake, because 99 per cent is zero for me.” Forget zero or hundred per cent, because coming up next is One Two Three where this Patna-born Delhi University graduate is playing the role of a Jat police inspector.
Like a true Indian daughter, she feels her success can be attributed to her mother almost completely, and numbers pop up again. “My mother has always been helpful and a guiding spirit, she deserves 95 per cent of the credit for my success.”
Neetu has also acted in Tamil and Telugu films like Vishnu and Godavari. Besides, she is a black belt in martial arts and has represented her State in taekwondo and basketball.
