Foreign films

Alliance Francaise de Madras takes you on a voyage through regions, eras, stories of lives and loves this month with its screening of films by Wim Wenders, Sofia Coppola, Krzysztof Kieslowski and Jane Campion. Today, “Paris Texas” will be screened. Directed by Wim Wenders, the film revolves around a man who wanders out of a desert not knowing who he is. His brother finds him, and reminds him of the life he led before he walked out on his wife and son some years ago. Does his memory return?

“Red”, to be screened on January 20, is about a young model, Valentine, living in Geneva. Because of a dog she ran over, she meets a retired judge who spies his neighbours’ phone calls, not for money but to feed his cynicism.

On January 21, “Marie Antoinette” will be screened. Based on Antonia Fraser’s book about the ill-fated Archduchess of Austria and later Queen of France, “Marie Antoinette” tells the story of the most misunderstood and abused woman in history, from her birth in Imperial Austria to her later life in France.

In “The Piano”, which will be screened on January 22, a mute woman along with her young daughter and her prized piano, are sent to 1850s New Zealand for an arranged marriage to a wealthy landowner and she’s soon lusted after by a local worker on the plantation.

The films will be screened at 6.30 p.m. daily at the AFM Auditorium, Nungambakkam.
