Winter festival

The Russian Winter Festival was held in London

Last weekend, large crowds headed to Trafalgar Square for the Russian Winter Festival, the annual event in the heart of the city that gave Londoners, as well as the city’s Russian community, the chance to enjoy music, dance, food and other attr actions from across Russia.

The free event, which took place on January 13, featured hundreds of traditional and contemporary performers from the four corners of Russia, lavishly dressed in vibrant and varied national costumes.

Highlights included a special guest appearance by the Russian National Dance show and a headline performance by Russian pop star Dima Bilan. The event was officially launched when large-scale, custom-made Russian nesting dolls were unveiled, against the magnificent backdrop of the British Airways London Eye.

Each of the dolls - known as matryoshka - have been hand painted and lacquered according to Russian tradition.

At the event besides a mix of live performances, music and other attractions aimed at people of all ages, Russian food was available, including blinis (Russian pancakes) and pirozhkis (Russian pies), borsch (beetroot soup) and shashlik (Russian kebabs) to savour, plus genuine Russian beer.

There were Russian street games, puppet theatre, wandering circus acts and performance artistes and musicians to entertain children. There was even the chance to meet Russian sporting legends and take a shot at the ice-hockey goal. The Russian Winter Festival included the Best of the Moscow International Film Festival and the Pet Shop Boys’ scored version of ‘Battleship Potemkin’ at the Barbican, and the eagerly anticipated ‘From Russia’ exhibition of French and Russian masters at the Royal Academy.
