Two to tango

The Mom and I contest held recently was more about having fun than winning

Super Mom and Super Girl Shalini and Gauri

They danced and sang, performed magic tricks and put up skits and generally had a lot of fun. The 17 pairs of mothers and daughters who participated in the ‘Meera Mom and I’ finale, held recently at the Music Academy, were a sporting bunc h and they kept the mood of the evening light throughout.

The show, which aims to crown the most talented and in-sync mom and daughter duo ‘Meera Super Mom and Super Girl’, began slowly enough with a prop round. Each duo was given a prop such as an umbrella or a pot, and they had to come up with as many innovative uses for it as they could within 30 seconds. Some pairs seemed clearly at a loss, but some spirited moms and bright-spark daughters did manage to come up with seven or more ideas (‘spanking’ seemed to be a particularly popular one with the moms).

Enthusiastic

The proceedings really picked up with the talent show round, when one simply had to hand it to the enterprising pairs. The moms were especially sporting, doing everything from dancing dapankuthu-style to ‘Pokkiri Pongal’ and playing Rajnikanth’s ‘Lakalakalaka’ raja to a poi kal kudrai dance to a fusion Kathakali number. Then there was the ambitious ‘multilingual magic act’, do-re-mi-fa-so sung with a veena, and the mom-daughter cabaret duo (mom sang while daughter danced to ‘Piya tu’ and ‘Yeh mera dil’). Some were excellent, while others were slightly strange, but none of them could be accused of lacking enthusiasm or liveliness.

When seven were finally chosen out of 17, it almost seemed besides the point — this evening really was one of those that seemed more about having fun than winning. But, of course, it needed to be done, and soon it was time to further trim the seven down to the final winners with a brief question and answer segment where the pairs where posed the question — “Who’s behind every successful daughter, mom or dad?” Of course, most said mom (it was the ‘Mom and I’ contest, after all), but one pair did throw dad a crumb, drawing enthusiastic applause from the men in the audience.

And then it was time to crown the ‘Meera Super Mom and Super Girl 2007/2008’ chosen by the six judges of the evening - Kausalya Sivakumar (singer), Mekhala Chandrasekar of Siemens Ltd., Amit Nahar (Chennai Man, 2007), Dr. Srikala of Sankara Hospitals and Sunaina Eye Care, Venu Aravind (television and film actor) and Radhika Surjith (dancer). The title went to Shalini and Gauri, with Dr. Shanthi and Asha coming in as the first runners-up, Mala and Divya as the second runners-up and Seetha and Vaishnavi the third. Fittingly, a celebrity mom and daughter duo — Manjula and Sridevi Vijaykumar — did the honours, as dad Vijaykumar looked on.

The entire Mom and I contest is being aired Sundays at 6 p.m. on Star Vijay, so you can catch all the action, including the various sub-events that lead up to the finale.
