My face is oily. But, during winter it becomes dry. I do the fruit facial every alternate month and yet it is dry. Bhagirathi

Oily skin becomes dry in winter due to superficial dryness of the outer layer. Mix one teaspoon each of honey and milk and apply it daily on the face, washing it off after 15 minutes. You can also apply a light moisturising lotion. If the lotion is too oily, add a drop of water to it before applying it. Apply a fruit mask at least once a week. Ripe papaya pulp can be mixed with mashed banana. Add a little honey or curd to this. Apply it and leave it on for 20 minutes and wash it off with plain water.

How can I make my eyes look wider? Ursika

You can make your eyes appear wider with the help of make-up. Apply a dark shadow on the outer side, starting from the centre and going outwards and slightly beyond the outer corners. Eye liner or eye pencil should also start from the centre of the upper lid and then outwards.

My mother finds it difficult to go to the beauty parlour to shape her eye brows. What’s the alternative? Fayad

To determine the shape of the brows, hold a pencil straight against the side of your nose, so that it goes upward in a line above the inner corner of your eye. This is where the brow should begin. Then hold it diagonally from the base of the nose towards the corner of the eyes. The brow should end above this point. The brow should be shaped in the form of a gentle arch. While plucking hair with a tweezer, do not pluck hair from above the brows but only from below. After plucking, apply an astringent lotion using cotton wool.

I have pimples on my face and I am taking treatment from a skin specialist. Can you suggest the right diet? Sudha

Include fresh fruits, raw salads, sprouts and yoghurt in your daily diet. Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water daily. Add the juice of a lemon to a glass of water and drink it first thing in the morning. You can also ask your doctor to prescribe vitamin and mineral supplements.

I have pimples on my chin and my face is looks hard and rough. My skin type is oily. I am using a medically prescribed soap and lotion. Suggest a remedy. Nazini

You should not apply creams, unless they are oil-free and specifically meant for problem skin. Mix one teaspoon each of honey and curd and apply it daily on your skin. Wash it off after 20 minutes with plenty of water. It would help soften the skin. Two or three times a week, mix multani mitti with rosewater, one teaspoon of lemon juice and sandalwood paste. Apply it on the face and wash it off when it is dry. You can also apply sandalwood paste directly on the pimples.

I have big thighs for my build. What exercises would you recommend to tone them down? — Swathi

You can do the following exercises daily, after consulting your doctor. Lie on your right side, leaning on your elbow. Place your left hand on the floor, palm downwards, in front of your chest. Lift your left leg about 8 inches off the floor and hold it. Supporting yourself with your hips, elbows and hands, try to raise the right leg to try and touch the raised left foot. Return both legs slowly to the floor. Repeat this 5 times and then turn on your left side and repeat.
