Exhibition with a difference

A collection of art works by children with special needs is on Vylopilly Samskrithi Bhavan

Man with a mission David Arribas Cubero

It is an exhibition with a difference at Vylopilly Samskrithi Bhavan.

A collection of art works by children with special needs; the walls of the exhibition hall are adorned with colourful collages made from bits of paper and cloth.

Masks made by the children hang from the ceiling. One of the highlights of the exhibition is a wall covered with a huge patchwork.

Art fair

Says David Arribas Cubero who is organising the exhibition: “It is more of an art fair. There are around a hundred paintings by the children of the Government School for the Deaf, Marion Play Home and the Observation, Special and Children’s Home, Poojapura.” An active social worker, David conducts art workshops for these children.

“These children require special attention. Often their voices go unheard. They need a way to express themselves freely without words or boundaries and what better way than through art? I want to make art accessible to these children,” says the artiste who is on grant to study at the Government Fine Arts College, Thiruvananthapuram by Spanish Agency for International Cooperation, which is run by the Spanish Government.

A green activist, David encourages his students to make art from recyclable material.

“You can make so many beautiful works using leftovers of cloth, discarded newspaper, egg shells, coconut husks…You just need a bit of imagination,” says David.

The exhibition titled ‘Art Fair Art’ is on till January 29.
