“Discovery Atlas”, a series featuring the world’s greatest countries, premieres on Discovery Channel, today at 9 p.m., with the episode “India Revealed”. Subsequent episodes on Brazil, China, Australia, Italy, Mexico and South Africa will air every Saturday at 9 p.m. Episodes on Russia, France, Japan and Egypt, currently under production, will air later in the year.
The narrative will focus on the rich culture, geography and natural phenomena of some of the countries. The production team of Discovery Atlas travelled to different locations within each country using various forms of transportation, including hot air balloons, propeller planes, bamboo rafts, canoes, riverboats, helicopters, bicycle taxis, motorbike taxis and subways.
Discovery Channel will present a portrait of the nations seen through the lives of their people. Each two-hour episode is narrated by a celebrity, among them are Academy Award Winning actor Russel Crowe (Australia Revealed), renowned film director Mira Nair (India Revealed), three-time Emmy Award winner James Spader (China Revealed), Oscar nominee Edward James Olmos (Mexico Revealed), Italian actor and filmmaker Isabella Rossellini (Italy Revealed), Emmy Award-winning American actor Andre Braugher (South Africa Revealed) and Sela Ward, recipient of the Golden Globe Award, (Brazil Revealed).
During the shooting of “India Revealed”, what struck the crew about filming in India was the fact that nothing was ever a problem here. Wanting to shoot in the Sundarbans mangrove swamp – the largest mangrove swamp in the world, infested with snakes, crocodiles and tigers, the crew had hoped to do a crane shot from the middle of the jungle but were told that being a swamp there was no firm ground and that the tidal range was over 12 feet so it would be hard to put a film crane up next to the river. However, when they returned the next day they discovered an incredible 20 feet high tower made out of bamboo felled from the jungle. It was steady as a rock and they managed to get the shot.
As India strives to join the leading edge of the world’s powers, century-old conventions are coming under pressure forcing deep shifts and changes within Indian society. “India Revealed” strives to capture those shifts and changes, tensions and conflicts even as they are being played out in the world today. Different aspects of the country – Mother Ganges (Varanasi), The Big Indian Wedding, The Sundarbans, The Indian Aerospace Industry, The Gurukul System in Rishikesh, the Jama Masjid and outsourcing – will be covered.
