A cause on wheels

ROKO Cancer, an initiative of the London-based Manjit Kaur Chawla

rust, in collaboration with numerous NGOs, launched a new state-of-the-art mobile breast cancer detection unit during one of ROKO’s largest cancer detection camps at the India Habitat Centre recently. Gracing the occasion were Shovana Narayan, acclaimed danseuse, Dr. Raghu Ram, internationally renowned consultant oncoplastic breast surgeon, Dr. Col. C.S. Pant and fashion designer Ritu Kumar.Isha Bhandari, Director of Operations, ROKO India said, “We are hap py to launch the second breast cancer detection unit, which is the first of its kind in India. Here one can get a mammogram done free of cost at one’s doorstep. The entire process takes only 15 minutes and the reports are given there and then.”

The daylong camp included a free on-the-spot mammogram test and consultation by leading physicians.

There were also cancer awareness sessions. Supporters of this cause and breast cancer survivors were also felicitated on the occasion.

The event witnessed the screening of a lovely short film “Love for Life”. The film depicts the emotional challenges and trauma a cancer patient endures.

Its message is that the human spirit is stronger than anything that can happen to it. Shovana Narayan delighted the audience with her scintillating performance.

Dr. Raghu Ram said, “I am delighted that MKC Trust has set up a mobile breast cancer detection unit and is working towards the cause. The ability to localise and treat the disease will make a difference to women,” he believes.

Delays and fears

Dr. Pant pointed out that many women began treatment at a late stage. “The cause for delay is mainly fear of the unknown, fear of painful tests and wasteful expenditure,” he said. He spoke about the risk factors and dietary factors that can avert breast cancer.

ROKO Cancer mobile vans, have been to Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh and Delhi. ROKO’s next venture will be towards Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
