Useful
Strike a balance (Metroplus January 17) helped me correct a few methods I followed. It should have been of interest to many others too. Some of the frank views of Sameer Hanchate, the maker of the 1992-stock market crash- related film Gafla, reproduced in the article Bulls and bears (Jan. 21) are good. The film and this write-up assume great significance in the context of the prevailing volatility in the Indian stock market.

Wonder herb
Rosemary seems to be a wonder herb with many uses (Ready for Rosemary, Jan. 17). It is an ideal plant for home gardens, and a delight for plant lovers.

Commendable
Ingrid Newkirk’s concern and care for the animals is commendable (Animal Charms, Jan. 19). Newkirk’s efforts to involve children in the prevention of cruelty to animals and help them are praiseworthy, and deserve all the support and encouragement.

Social stigma
Bar bar dekho (January 14) highlights the positive and negative aspects of women’s job as bartenders. Though women are now employed in all spheres, working in bars may be seen as a social stigma under Indian cultural ethos. They would be guilty of making more men alcoholics as men would be drawn to bars where women serve.
