Car and bike questions? We have the answers

I want to buy a car that can seat at least 7-8 people and my budget is Rs 7-8 lakh. I have short-listed the Innova, Tavera and Scorpio. Which is the best in terms of mileage, comfort, low maintenance costs and durability in the long run? You can even suggest other cars in the same segment if you feel they will suit me better.

Vamsee

For a people carrier, there is nothing better than the Innova. It’s comfortable, spacious and reliable. The engine is smooth but a little noisy but it’s a great car.

I want to buy a diesel car and my budget is around Rs 7-8 lakh. I have short-listed the Logan, Indigo and Verna. Which of these is the best with regard to comfort, low maintenance and fuel efficiency? We will use the rear seat a lot as we have a driver. So please keep this in mind.

Raghuram

As an overall package, Verna is better. But the Logan and the Indigo are good at their price brackets as well. Both have good backseats. Seats on the Verna are slightly lower. The spares of Logan and Indigo are also cheaper than Verna’s. But having said all that, we would still prefer the Verna.

I am going to buy my first car and have short-listed the Wagon R and the Hyundai Santro. I drive 20km and drive once in three days. I have heard that the engine of the Wagon R weakens soon as it runs on both LPG and petrol. Is that true? My main priority is fuel efficiency. Please suggest which would suit me best.

Tejas Kulkarni

The engine of the Wagon R doesn’t necessarily weaken but it does produce less amount of power when it runs on LPG. If mileage is your main priority, then the Wagon R or the Estilo would do you good. But otherwise, the Santro is a far better product and difference in the mileage isn’t much either. But we suggest that you take a look at the new i10 as well.

I want to buy the Zen Estilo. I like its looks and performance. I want to know the pluses and minuses of this car.

Shankar Ganesh

The Zen Estilo is a much better car than the Wagon R. The engine is peppy but becomes noisy as the revs climb and the noise can be intrusive. It’s a good city car but is not suited for the highway. The seating also may not be comfortable for large adults over long distances. But it is fuel efficient, the spares are cheap and service backup is good. So if you plan to use it for the city commute then it makes for a good choice.

I want to buy a Wagon R Duo. Can you please let me know about the level of comfort of this car as well as what it will be like to drive on LPG on city roads?

Venu

The LPG system on the Wagon R is good because its tuning has meant that it doesn’t suffer much power loss when being driven on LPG. As a city car, it makes for a good choice and on LPG it is pocket-friendly as well. However, the seats aren’t the best and the gearshift quality not great either. Alternatively, you could look at the i10 or the Santro, which are far better products.

I want to buy a new car and this will be my first car. My budget is around Rs 4 lakh and as I am over 50 years of age, I want a gearless car. I have been told that the Maruti Wagon R and the Hyundai i10 are options that I should consider. What are the good and bad qualities of these cars? Is there a big difference between the fuel efficiency figures of automatic vehicle as opposed to gearless vehicles?

Raj Kumar

At your budget, the only option is the Santro Automatic. The i10 may come with an automatic option as well in the future but as of now at the given price range, the Santro Auto is the only car available. The difference in the fuel efficiency isn’t much thanks to the 4-speed auto transmission. Alternatively, if you can manage to find a Honda City CVT in the used market then that would be nothing like it.
