Jallikattu is a sport of heroism. It is one of the ‘nararasas’ or ‘veera rasas.’ It shows one’s valour and courage. Though it is a risky job, young people like to participate in the sport. Jallikattu, a world acclaimed bull fight, dates back to Mohenjodaro-Harappa period. The Blue Cross society has objected to the sport pointing out animal torture. Tamil Nadu Government appealed to the apex court which granted permission to conduct the sport with certain conditions. The villagers protested by pulling down shutters of shops, tonsuring their heads and hoisting black flags. This shows their attachment to the sport. Realising the importance, the apex court lifted the ban. Jallikattu is like a bitter sweet pill.

R.Gopalakrishnan,

Madurai.
