The idea of making Thai 1 as the beginning of the Tamil New Year may not be agreed upon by many. It may affect the sentiments of people. Thai 1 is the day for farmers and that cannot be clubbed with the start of the year. There is a sanctity of choosing Chithirai 1 as the first day of the Tamil New Year. In fact ’Vishu’ and ’Ugadi’ also fall nearer to the conventional date of Tamil New year. The Government should have sought opinion of public before implementing the change.
