The idea of celebrating Thai 1 as Tamil New Year should be welcomed. The first day of the Thai month is celebrated as Pongal, a day when the Sun God is specially thanked with various offerings. Paddy and sugarcane are ready for harvest by the arrival of "Thai."

In addition, astronomically it is proved that the days are longer from the month of Thai. Thai 1 is a better day to celebrate Tamil New Year, thus promoting and proliferating the richness of Tamil culture.
