For administrative purpose, cutting birth day cakes of our leaders and computer’s regional settings, we adopt British date system. For panchangams, writing horoscopes and in religious functions, Tamil date system is used, supported by British date system. Whatever be the Government’s announcement, the above customs being followed by the people are not going to change. So the announcement of Thai first as the Tamil New Year Day is not going to make impact on any one. In fact, it will dilute the importance given to harvest and farmers. The Government should focus on improving the living standards of farmers, by promoting agro based industries providing training in integrated farming, drip irrigation and mechanised farming and effective implementation and monitoring of waste land development scheme.
