S. Ganesh Kumar creates miniature figurines in gold

Test of skills S. Ganesh Kumar working on a piece
It is no bigger than the tip of a matchstick and yet its maker S. Ganesh Kumar says it may be considered a collector’s item. A 4.55 mm by 4.06 mm figurine of the Nataraja in gold, it weighs a mere 10 milligram.
Probably the smallest statuette of the Nataraja in gold, this creation which has to be viewed with a magnifying glass is a hand-crafted masterpiece. “Everything is done by hand. I had to use specially designed tools to craft this piece,” says Ganesh, a jeweller at Poojapura.
Strenuous excercise
According to Ganesh, it took him eight months to complete his creation. “It strains the eye, as the piece is so tiny. I spared an hour each day for this.”
But why go through all the trouble to create this? “Because I want to be different and stand out and show what I am capable of creating. It can be called a test of skills as a slight slip of the hand can mar the piece. Working on such a craft requires good eye sight, a steady hand and oodles of patience,” says this 31-year-old who has other miniature creations to his credit.
If his replica of the Nataraja in gold is complete with his leg on the Apasmara, his model of a Kerala boat has a boatman lazing on the boat. Ganesh has also replicated a cannon, a Shivalingam, a mermaid and Christ on the cross. “Each piece is unique. If you ask me to create an identical piece of one of these creations, I would have to refuse as each figurine is an expression of the mind and hand.”
Asked what his plans were, and Ganesh says, “I might conduct an exhibition of my creations shortly.”
