In all hues and tastes

The streets are flooded with various fruits. But, are we eating enough and right?

Fruits fruits everywhere Fruits, consumed after a meal, will putrefy the meal itself.

As the seasons change, the variety of seasonal fruits on sale in the city, change as well. Fruit sellers pushing carts groaning with bright orange, loose jacket oranges from Nagpur or scarlet apples from Kulu, can be found at every cross-road. Some carts are loaded with mountains of sweet white grapes as well as the regular year round favourite – the banana.

“Avoid eating grapes as the seasons change,” advises Badrinath Chillarige, long time resident of Medhipatnam. “Consuming grapes and pineapples during this in-between winter chill and on coming summer, will definitely give you a sore throat,” he warns, while eager buyers haggle with the fruit seller, over the price.

Professor Sudhakar Reddy, senior professor of Economics at the Centre for Economics and Social Studies in Begumpet says he loves to eat all kinds of fruit all the year round. “I buy my fruit from Chouppal, which I think has the best local and imported fruit on sale in the city. Oranges are a big favourite during this season besides papayas and sapotas. Being diabetic I have to avoid mangoes and custard apple which are favourites. Instead I indulge in guavas and pomegranates, which a friend sends me from his garden.”

What does celebrity nutritionist Karen Bhatia from Banjara Hills, advise regarding which fruit to eat and which to avoid. “Fruit is one of the most important foods in a persons daily diet. All fruits are good but eating them wrongly can cause more harm than good,” she advises. “The misconception of eating fruits out of season is not right and every fruit brings different benefits and vitamins to the body. Fruit is best eaten in the early hours of the day and preferably on an empty stomach, so the body can absorb the nutrients and detoxify itself. It’s a mistake to eat fruit after a meal, as the body cannot digest it appropriately after a heavy meal. In fact the fruit consumed after a meal will putrefy the meal itself. Eaten correctly fruit can help eliminate harmful substances within the body naturally.”
