IT QUIZ Was loads of fun
All eyes were glued to the huge screen. With each passing question, heads came together, hush-hushing the answer. While a few students sat scratching their heads, others clenched their fists in frustration. Fewer still sat under the comfort of utter ignorance.
Soon, it was answer-time. And, at once, the quiet auditorium was engulfed by a cacophony of phenomenal enthusiasm, which set the tone for the event. The IT Quiz conducted by Computer Society of India, Coimbatore Chapter, was for students aged between 11 and 14, and saw the participation of over 400 teams from schools in Coimbatore, Erode, Udumalpet and Nilgiris districts, and Kerala.
20 posers
The teams tackled 20 posers in the prelims. The questions ranged from absolute sitters such as identifying the logo of Logitech to some tough cookies such as the expansion of IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) and POP (Post Office Protocol).
After a well fought-out battle, six teams entered the finals: Carmel Matriculation Higher Secondary School from Erode; Army School from Wellington; St. Judes from Kotagiri; Stanes HSS from Coonoor, and Karunya Residential School and SBK Vidya Mandhir from Coimbatore. And, the fun started. The questions began after a couple of contestants sent prayers heavenward.
In the first rounds, teams had to identify one true statement from the three given. All but one got the right answer. The second round Topology was a crossword, and the grids kept filling swiftly. Subsequent rounds followed with plenty more questions, and a sure winner emerged well before the quiz was headed to its end. Army School from Wellington cracked even the difficult ones with aplomb, and surged ahead by miles. And, from then on the battle was for the second slot.
Doing a Yuvraj!
In one round, the Army School got all the six answers right, and the quizmaster said the team did a Yuvraj! The quiz came to an end with the final buzzer round.
The top team was beaming ear to ear with over 100 points, and the rest had to make do with slapping their foreheads. B.R. Shekar and Gowtham, bagged the trophy, a gift hamper, and went home richer by Rs. 5,000 between them. They were followed by D. Gokul Krishnaa and Payal Priyadarshini Nayak from St. Judes; and E. Emmanuel and A. Bobby Wilson Thomas from Karunya. The best team names were won by J. Arjun and R. Manojkumar of GD MHSS (VIRUS - Vital Intellectual Resource Under Siege) and R. Adityaraman and K.G. Darshan of Angappa Senior Secondary School (IBM - Intellectual Best Machines). N. Atshara Sri and Harini Vasudev of St. Hilda’s School, Udhagamandalam, bagged a special prize for being the youngest high scoring team in prelims.
There were plenty of questions for the audience too. One of the best was, What is Rajini virus? The virus, apparently, creeps into one file and corrupts a hundred of them!
Quizmaster Giri Pickbrain Balasubramaniam commands special mention for making the IT Quiz thoroughly enjoyable – for both the participants and the audience.
